about

Hi All! Welcome to Week 2!

This week's tune is "Who's Gonna Save Us?" by The Living End. I remember exactly who told me about this band and when (that would be my pal Mike Drew, in our freshman year of High School). Mike had seen them play with Green Day at Convention Hall, and then HBO had filmed it for their live music show, Reverb, so I got to see how amazing they were first hand.

I have to be real here; Chris Cheney is one of my guitar heroes. He's honestly one of the reasons I picked up a Gretsch guitar, and love filtertron style pickups to this day. I don't know if it was through their music, through coincidence, or both, but the guitar tones and riffs in TLE's music is what I hear in my head when I think "rock n roll".

That being said, this song has some tricks and licks that took me a minute to even get close to, (those damn plucks!), but I feel better as a guitarist for going through it. Side note: big thanks to Jake Schwartz for breaking down the mechanics of a couple things for me. I don't know if I would have figured it out on my own without breaking something. I couldn't use anything other than my Black Falcon to record all of the leads to this song, because it's only right, and since my Wizard head is still in the Jersey City space since lockdown started, I went with the other Marshall-esque amp in my arsenal; my Sommatone Vibe-85.

I feel like this one feels tighter a bigger than the previous one. I definitely started easing into some of the process, like effectively using plugins, and making my use of time more efficient. A huge thank you to my Chapter brother Matt Balog for adding bass to this song. He loves TLE more than I do, and I couldn't think of a better person to rip through this, especially without a pick. Thanks as well to Allison and Brett for adding their voices. After recording the vocals, it was way too thin in the choruses with just me, so they really made the song closer to what it should be.

I also felt like this song just had weight for me right now, given the current state of our country, and the horrible "leaders" that only work to take advantage of us. If there's anything I want to accomplish with this project, I want to feel like I'm adding to the solution, and not the problems. I hope you enjoy it, and let's do some good work.

Cheers!
