Hi friends, welcome to week 4. This week has been a little more anxiety-inducing for a number of reasons, but definitely, in part, because I was tackling "Movielike" by the incredible Jimmy Eat World. Also didn't realize until today that this is the 19th anniversary of their album, Bleed American, and yesterday was the 24th anniversary of Static Prevails.
I'm gonna be real, and many people already know this; Jimmy Eat World is probably my favorite band in the world. From the moment I first heard them (thanks again Mr. Drew!) until today, they have consistently inspired me, entertained me, and at one point, employed me. I wouldn't be here without this band, and I'll never be able to repay the influence they've had on me.
When this record came out, I was going through a pretty intense period of change in my personal life, so I definitely slept on it for a little, but my best pal Joe Lemble told me about this song and that I would really appreciate it. Needless to say, this song hit me just like he knew it would. Now, I don't know if it's because of the circumstances of the time this came out, or just my preferences in regards to their catalog, but this album, Invented, is towards the bottom of the list for me. I still enjoy this record a bunch, but i think the ones that have followed are better, in my opinion, and that doesn't change that Movielike is one of my favorite songs they've made. I think that's just another reason why they're so good; even on your least favorite record, you'll find an amazing tune.
I spent a lot of time on this one, and I'm sure I would spend a ton more because my neurosis was becoming ridiculous. That being said, I had a number of accomplishments that I'm pretty proud of:
1. I switched out the carbon steel snare I had used for the first 3 songs, with my reliable 14x8 Tama maple snare, because I hoped it would have a deeper/beefier sound, and I was able to tune it to accomplish just that.
2. I had a really crappy obstacle trying to get the acoustic guitars to sound right, and through troubleshooting and and a nice recommendation by my pal Nick from 8 Graves, I got them under control.
3. The electric guitar was lacking a little, so I just doubled the whole thing using the same rig (SG into Solodallas Storm, into Sommatone Roaring-40) but added my Like Jones Grit Cake to fill out the sound with some extra low end and gain. I spent time tweaking each mic level and pan position to get it where I wanted it.
4. All the keys and samples. This is something that is definitely not my comfort zone, and I hope to get better at, but being able to accomplish anywhere close to the desired effect is really big for me.
Thanks again to Kevin for his guidance, and thanks to you folks for checking it out. We're winding down in July, so only one more week to raise funds for the Movement for Black Lives, before we switch to a different charity.
Love ya, Cheers!
